The Way of the Cross: Matthew 26:57-75 (Jesus and Caiaphas, the Denial of Peter)
In this week’s Lenten sermon, Bishop Chris contrasts two simultaneous “reveals” under pressure: Jesus is revealed as the faithful Son of God who openly claims his divine identity, while Peter is revealed as a fearful, failing disciple who denies Jesus. In the Gospel message, Matthew places these images side by side to show that human strength collapses under pressure, but Jesus’ faithfulness does not, even as he moves toward the cross. The good news is that Peter’s failure becomes the doorway to mercy, reminding us that our hope rests not in our faithfulness to Christ, but in Christ’s faithfulness to us.
